MTN Nigeria announces NCC’s approval to lease Spectrum from T2 Mobile

Nigeria’s communications giant, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, said it has gotten the approval fo the Nigerian Communications Commissions, NCC, to lease its additional spectrum from T2 Mobile Limited to significantly boost network capacity and improve digital space nationwide.

The lease agreement is to take effect from October 1, 2025 to cover 5MHz Frequency Dividion Duplex, FDD in the 900MHz band and 15MHz Frequency, FDD in the 1800MHz band for a duration of three years.

The MTN management explained that the spectrum lease is a vital enabler for its national roaming agreement with T2 Mobile, allowing MTN to effectively manage increased network traffic generated by T2’s customer base on its infrastructure. This integrated approach—combining spectrum trading with roaming services—reflects MTN Nigeria’s broader strategy of driving collaboration, optimizing infrastructure, and advancing digital inclusion.

The company further highlighted that the move would demonstrate the company’s belief in shaping a more sustainable telecommunication ecosystem, stressing that collaboration including the onboarding Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) and signing a national roaming deal with T2—are part of its efforts to broaden access to high-speed broadband and drive Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.

Meanwhile, MTN Nigeria confirmed that it will not renew its one-year spectrum lease agreement with Natcom Development and Investment Ltd (Ntel), which currently provides access to 5MHz FDD in the 900MHz band and 10MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band across 17 states. That agreement expires on November 29, 2025, in line with its contractual terms.
