2027: Peter Obi will get my support, if he emerges as coalition’s presidential candidate — Lamido

A former Foreign Affairs Minister and former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido has publicly declared his support for Peter Obi, if he emerged as standard flag bearer of the coalition in the 2027 general election.

Reacting to questions from journalists on Peter Obi’s statement that he would spend only four years and quit if he is voted into office as President and Commander-in-Chief, Lamido, said, “If the coalition produces Peter Obi or anyone else committed to rescuing Nigeria, I will support them. But I remain PDP. We should have outgrown tribal and regional sentiments.

Lamido insisted that he will remain in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to support Obi or any candidate produced by the coalition.

Lamido position comes as the Middle Belt Forum said, Nigerians can leverage on the credibility of Peter Obi who has good track record of keeping his promise to vote him into office in 2027 general election.

The Middle Belt Forum was of the opinion that the north might throw weight behind Obi, given that he has given his word that he will spend only one term of office and relinquish.

The National President of MBF, Dr Bitrus Pogu told journalists that the Forum was aware of the turn of the South, hence, they should vote Obi who is known for keeping to his promise that after a four year tenure, he will quit.

According to him, Obi is someone that could be trusted from the South since any move to produce a candidate from the North might not fly.

He said that they could support Peter Obi based on his promise or former President Goodluck Jonathan if he is allowed, and the fact that the law would permit him only one term.

Dr. Pogu said, “I want to say that a drowning person wouldn’t mind even holding onto a straw thinking that it will save him. So, in the situation which the North finds itself in, I do not think that their choices are many.

Getting a Northerner to contest is a problem and they must have to trust somebody that has a track record of consistency which Peter Obi seems to have.
