Senator Seriake Dickson

Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Seriake Dickson has distanced himself from the defection of Governor Duoye Diri to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, saying he remains a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He expressed his belief that there was no need to defect to the ruling party, given that one party state was dangerous to the development of democracy as it would lead to dictatorship.

Briefing Senate Press Corps after plenary on Wednesday, the former governor expressed disappointment that he was not consulted by the governor or any of the 23 members of Bayelsa State House of Assembly before they defected, noting that “the crisis in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party”, which they cited as reasons for their defection could be resolved by the leadership of the party.

He said: “What is the essence of having party leadership? Is it not to resolve crisis?”

According to him, Governor Duoye Diri and the members of the State House of Assembly are members of his team which he handed over power to them, revealing that he never played political godfather since he left the government house as governor because he did believe in godfatherism.

“Unlike other places, I didn’t play godfather to anyone. I left and I have left to face my legislative duties at the National Assembly as Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District.” I will not leave PDP and “I remain a lone northern star”.

On Wednesday, Governor Duoye Diri led all the 23 members of the State House of Assembly members from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in Yenagoa, capital of Bayelsa State.
