NNPP’s Kwankwaso may defect to ADC in political realignment, fixes date

As politicking intensifies across political parties ahead of 2027 general election, fresh fact has emerged that the National Leader of the New Nigeria Political Party, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso may formally obtain the membership card of the opposition African Democratic Party, ADC on Wednesday.
A strong member of ADC hinted Kwankwaso will obtain his membership card in his hometown, Kwankwaso in Madobi Local Government Council of Kano State and would thereafter register electronically as required by law.

Kwankwaso was the presidential candidate of the NNPP in the 2023 general election. The NNPP also won Kano governorship, but the governor recently defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC ahead of general election after he has secured their consent for the return ticket.
CAPITAL POST recalled that the Kwankwaso recently hosted chieftains of ADC in his Kano residence amid speculations of his defection.

Apart from that, Mr Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde also met Kwankwaso behind close doors. Though, their discussion was not disclosed, the meeting raised suspicion of political realignment.
Makinde is a leading figure in a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Kabiru Turaki, SAN.
The Turaki-led faction of the PDP has remained locked in a prolonged leadership dispute with another group aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Both camps have continued to lay claim to the party’s leadership, while reconciliation efforts have yet to produce a breakthrough.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the ADC on Tuesday received the report of its constitution review committee.
The report was received by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, on behalf of the National Chairman, Senator David Mark.
In a speech read on his behalf by Osunbor, Mark emphasised that the constitution review must reflect the current political realities.
He added that the revised constitution should strengthen internal democracy, transparency, and accountability within the party.
“I am particularly encouraged that this review process involved wide consultations across the states, zones, and critical stakeholders of our party,” the statement read.
“This inclusive approach reinforces our belief that the ADC belongs to all its members, irrespective of status or position.”
