Tension in Jos over ‘Sarkin Yaki Jos’ title as group cautions against conferment
A Plateau-based pressure group, “One Plateau, One Voice”, has called for calm and vigilance over a purported move to confer the traditional title of “Sarkin Yakin Jos” on a former public office holder by a group describing itself as the Forum for Concerned Jos Community Elders & Stakeholders.
The group in a Press Conference in Jos on Monday by its Convener Mr Dogo Nanzing said it had observed an invitation circulating on social media announcing the conferment, warning that the development could generate confusion and deepen sensitivities around the traditional heritage of Jos.

While acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to associate freely and honour individuals, the group said such actions must not encroach on the exclusive domain of recognised traditional institutions.
“It is therefore imperative that any claim relating to such a title must emanate from, or be expressly endorsed by, the appropriate and recognised traditional institution vested with the customary authority to do so,” the statement read.

The group said Plateau State was already making efforts through government, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies and peace advocates to consolidate peace and promote harmonious coexistence, adding that all individuals and groups must act responsibly.
It cautioned that any move capable of creating suspicion, inflaming passions or reopening historical wounds should be avoided in the interest of peace.
“One Plateau, One Voice therefore urges all Plateau indigenes and all peace-loving residents of the state to completely disregard any unauthorized claims or activities that seek to appropriate or distort the authority of our recognized traditional institutions,” the group said.
The organisation also warned that Plateau had paid dearly for past conflicts and should not allow actions that could reverse gains recorded in recent years.
It urged residents to remain peaceful, law-abiding and vigilant, while calling on them to report any suspicious activity, unauthorised ceremony or gathering to security agencies.
The group also urged the Plateau State Government, relevant traditional councils and security agencies to monitor developments around the matter and provide clarification where necessary.
“Plateau State belongs to all law-abiding citizens and residents. Our diversity remains our greatest strength,” the statement added.
The group reaffirming its commitment to peace, justice and the dignity of the state’s ancestral heritage.
