ANDI condemns 2025 Diaspora Day Celebration, demands justice for victims of investment losses

The Association of Nigerians in Diaspora (ANDI), New York Chapter, has strongly criticized the recently held 2025 Diaspora Day celebration in Abuja.
The association described the event, which took place at the Presidential Villa, as a “tone-deaf and wasteful display” amid growing disillusionment among Nigerians abroad and unresolved cases of investment injustices.

In a statement signed by its President, Otunba Oladipo Dada, the association condemned the event—organized by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM)—as a misdirected initiative that fails to address the harsh realities confronting thousands of Nigerians living overseas, particularly in the United States.
“The 2025 Diaspora Day celebration is not only a misuse of national resources, but a grave insult to the countless diaspora citizens whose legitimate investments back home are being unlawfully destroyed.

“This celebration rings hollow to those who have lost millions through the illegal demolition of their properties in Lagos, particularly the well-documented case of WINHOMES Estate in Okun Ajah,” ANDI said.
Dada also accused the commission’s chairperson, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, of focusing on “glitzy ceremonies” while ignoring the pain and financial hardship of diaspora investors.
The Association said the commission, rather than promoting President Bola Tinubu’s pro-investment agenda, has become preoccupied with awards and fanfare.
According to them, this negligence not only undermines investor confidence but also contradicts Nigeria’s global image as a safe destination for diaspora engagement.
ANDI called for immediate action by the federal government, including a public investigation, compensation for affected investors, and policy reforms to protect future diaspora investments.
“We call on the federal government and all relevant authorities to urgently address the grievances of affected diaspora citizens, particularly those linked to the WINHOMES demolition and similar injustices across the country. Anything less will be interpreted as willful abandonment,” the association added.
The association also reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights and investments of Nigerians abroad and vowed to continue advocating for justice, accountability, and meaningful inclusion.
