BREAKING: Court jails former Accountant General Nwabuoku 72 years over N868 million fraud

Nigeria’s former Accountant General of the Federation, AGoF, Chukwuenyere Nwabuoku has been sentenced to 72 years imprisonment over fraud totaling N868 million without an option of fine by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
Delivering judgment on Monday, March 23, Justice James Omotosho, held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had been able to prove the nine-count money laundering charge beyond reasonable doubt, thereby convicted the ex-AGoF to 8 years imprisonment each for the 9 counts totaling 72 years.

“It was appalling for Nwabuoku to divert funds meant for security and defence while he was a Director of Finance and Account in the Ministry of Defence”, Justice Omotosho said.
He commended the anti-graft agency for being detailed in the prosecution, while he ordered that the 72-year counts will run concurrently.

Nwabuoku’s voluntary refund of N200 million during investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes commission was not controverted by the Ministry of Defence.
CAPITAL POST recalled that Nwabuoku was admitted to a N500 million bail with two sureties in the like sum after he was arraigned on January 15, 2025, on a nine-count amended charge.
The EFCC listed Nwabuoku as the sole defendant in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/240/2024.
The convicted Nwabuoku served as Director of Finance and Account 20219 and 2021 in the former President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
