INEC, NIMC partner to strengthen voter register ahead of 2027 polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will deepen collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to improve the integrity of Nigeria’s voter register ahead of the 2027 General Election.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), disclosed this while receiving the Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team on a courtesy visit to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Amupitan said the newly signed NIMC Act 2026 provides a legal framework for a more credible electoral system through verified identity, reduced duplication and stronger data integrity.
He said voter identity had remained vulnerable to impersonation and duplication, expressing confidence that the integration of NIMC’s database with INEC’s systems would strengthen verification and improve the credibility of the voter register.

According to him, NIMC’s database of over 136 million enrolled Nigerians would support continuous auditing of the register, eliminate duplicate and underage entries, and reduce the cost of conducting elections.
The INEC chairman also disclosed that the commission’s online voter registration platform is anchored on the National Identification Number (NIN), describing it as a critical step towards a seamless Continuous Voter Registration exercise.
He added that INEC would also leverage artificial intelligence under strict safeguards to improve the efficiency and integrity of its data systems.
Earlier, NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote said the NIMC Act, signed into law on June 26, 2026, repositions the commission as Nigeria’s digital identity authority and the foundation of the country’s digital public infrastructure.
She assured INEC of the commission’s full support in delivering a credible, transparent and technology-driven 2027 general election.
