Ahead of the 2027 general election, a group operating under the aegis of National Intelligence Watch has uncovered plot by some political elements to import foreign fighters into Benue State, urging the Federal Government of Nigeria to carry out immediate investigation.

The group alleged that the fighters would be coming into Benue State from the neighbouring countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger to destabilise Benue State ahead of the 2027 general election.

The group raised the alarm that if the development was not met with decisive action of government, it could worsen insecurity, endanger residents and undermine the credibility of the forthcoming elections.

The Chairman of the group, Chief Matthew Apine in a statement on Wednesday in Makurdi, expressed strong concerns that the intruders are being recruited to forment trouble in Benue State, during elections.

CAPITAL POST recalled the lingering political crisis between Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume and lately, moves by the Nyesom Wike’s Rainbow Coalition to enter into Benue.

However, some political groups in Benue have vowed to block the Rainbow Coalition’s attempt to have inroad into the State, a development that was confirmed by the Governor, who insisted that the political future of the people of Benue would be decided by the people themselves.

The National Intelligence Watch called on security agencies to wade in and investigate their claims with the aim of reprimanding the culprits which they believed that the plot was being orchestrated by the political exposed elements in the State.

The group asserted that the plotters intended to discredit the State government in order to influence the outcome of the 2027 election.

They however advised political actors to resolve their differences through negotiation, rather than resorting to carrying out carnage as Benue cannot afford to experience another dimension of brigandage that threatens public peace.

The group called for increased security vigilance in vulnerable communities, particularly areas where political rivalry and existing security challenges could heighten tensions ahead of the elections.

The group also appealed to residents to report credible intelligence about potential threats to the appropriate authorities while cautioning against the circulation of unverified information capable of triggering panic or deepening political divisions.
