Bandits ambush vigilante members, kill one, inflict injuries on others in Kogi

Suspected bandits have ambushed some members of vigilante group and killed one of them in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The vigilante were on rescue mission of the kidnapped victims who were taken to the forest by bandits within the LG area.

The slain member of the vigilante was identified as Opeyemi Aina.

Reports said Aina was killed in the early hours of Tuesday in gun battle with bandits.

Aina, said to be from Ijalu compound in Egbe and a member of the Amekunlaye Vigilante Group.

Some other vigilante members were said to have escaped with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

A resident, Mathew Babagbmi, said the group ran into an ambush during the operation.

“Opeyemi Aina, alongside other vigilante members, went out to rescue kidnap victims. Unfortunately, during the encounter, he was shot and died instantly,” he said.

Kogi State Police Command was yet to issue a statement confirming the incidet or otherwise barely a week after.

ASP Saliu Oyiza is the current spokesperson for the Command after taken over from SP William Ovye Aya.
