The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), His Eminence Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has called on the Nigerian government to identify and prosecute the perpetrators and sponsors of insecurity in the country.

Archbishop Okoh made this call on Wednesday during the 2025 Second Tri-Annual Council meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) held in Abuja.

He emphasized that both Christians and Muslims, who have fallen victim to the ongoing attacks across the country, are entitled to protection from the government, adding that sustained peace is crucial for Nigeria’s national progress.

While acknowledging the government’s ongoing efforts to address insecurity, Archbishop Okoh urged further collaboration with faith-based organizations to ensure effective peacebuilding.

“I would like to acknowledge the ongoing efforts of the federal government under the leadership of His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to reduce the level of insecurity in our nation,” said Archbishop Okoh. “We acknowledge the renewed initiatives to strengthen security architecture in order to combat the activities of terrorists and bandits across the country, and we encourage His Excellency to do even more.”

The CAN President further advised government officials to foster closer relationships with religious organizations, including NIREC, highlighting the unique value faith groups bring in mobilizing communities, promoting dialogue, and fostering social harmony.

“When they work hand in hand, sharing insights, coordinating initiatives, and proffering solutions, they will produce far greater impact,” he noted.

Archbishop Okoh stressed that “peace cannot be sustained without justice,” asserting that perpetrators and their sponsors must be held accountable.

He also called for adequate support for victims and the assurance of equal protection under the law for all citizens.

The theme of the 2025 meeting was “Collaboration of Inter-Religious Councils with Government to Promote Peace in Nigeria.”
