INEC swears in Tella, tasks him on credible elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, on Tuesday swore in Professor Adeniran Tella as a Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, charging him to prioritise credibility, transparency and professionalism in the conduct of elections.
Speaking during the ceremony at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Amupitan described the swearing-in as “a solemn occasion; an occasion of call to duty,” noting that Tella’s new role places him at the heart of Nigeria’s democratic system.

He said his tenure as INEC Chairman is driven by a clear mandate to deliver credible polls, stating: “My mandate is to deliver free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive elections that genuinely reflect the will of the Nigerian people.”
Amupitan stressed that the integrity of the electoral process is non-negotiable. “Your role as a Resident Electoral Commissioner is absolutely critical. Any compromise on our values or our procedures shall not be tolerated,” he warned.

The INEC boss urged Tella to strictly adhere to the Electoral Act and the Commission’s guidelines, adding, “We have a moral and legal obligation to ensure the electoral system is above reproach. Any misconduct, whether by omission or commission, shall not be accepted.”
He also urged him to instill public confidence in the system and resist the menace of electoral fraud. “Your primary goal must be to instill in the voters of your state the confidence that their choice truly counts. We are resolved to combat all forms of election rigging, including vote-buying,” he said.
Amupitan announced that Tella has been posted back to Oyo State, urging him to work closely with INEC staff to address voter apathy and strengthen democratic values. “Go forth and ensure your state is a beacon of hope and democratic values,” he added.
He congratulated the new REC and prayed for his success, saying, “Congratulations, and God bless you, and bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
