Prolonged detention of ex-governor El-Rufai dangerous – HURIWA

As the former governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai was brought to Court on Tuesday in Kaduna to face arraignment over allegations of massive fraud, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA has decried detention of El-Rufai, describing it as a dangerous pattern.

The group raised the alarm, saying the incarceration of the former governor and opposition figure was a dangerous pattern.

The group also raised concerns over the detention of military coup plotters without judicial trial.

In a well worded statement issued by the National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko and made available to journalists on Wednesday, he submitted that the detention of El-Rufai by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission raises serious constitutional and rule of law concerns.

Onwubiko declared as absurd the ICPC’s reliance on successive court orders to keep El-Rufai out of circulation without him filing substantive charges before a competent court.
