El-Rufai’s temporary release to bury dead mother humane, must be backed by Court – Adeyanju reacts

Reacting to the temporary release of the embattled former governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, a Human Rights Activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, said, the release was humane, but must be backed by Court.
He said it was normal for a detainee to be granted opportunity to attend to death of a relation, but to balance a humane and enforcement of the law, Court must be involved.

This was even as El-Rufai’s mother died at a hospital in Cairo, Egypt on Friday.
Adeyanju in a statement on Saturday, pointed out that since El-Rufai was remanded by a court order, any temporary release should be supported by a corresponding judicial directive.

“The decision to grant Mallam Nasir El-Rufai temporary release from Independent Corrupt Practices Commission custody to attend his mother’s burial is both humane and commendable but must be backed by court decision/order since he was remanded in custody on the order of the court,” he said.
He argued that such compassion was not undermining accountability, but a lawful compassionate measures.
“The decision to allow Elrufai to attend his mother’s funeral reflects a necessary balance between the demands of justice and respect for fundamental human dignity.
“Bail, whether administrative or judicial, should not be misconstrued as an escape from accountability, but rather as a lawful and compassionate accommodation in deserving circumstances,” he stated.
He noted that by commending the authorities for demonstrating empathy while adhering to due process.
“This action by the authorities is a welcome demonstration of empathy while upholding the rule of law,” he said.
