APC urges INEC to enforce supreme court ruling on party membership registers
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enforce a Supreme Court judgment requiring political parties to submit their membership registers at least 21 days before conducting primaries, congresses and conventions.
The party said strict compliance with the judgment was necessary to ensure transparency, internal democracy and adherence to the rule of law ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The APC made the call in a letter dated October 9, 2026, addressed to the INEC Chairman and co-signed by its National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and National Secretary, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by Felix Morka, the APC National Publicity Secretary.
The party urged the electoral commission to implement the Supreme Court judgment delivered on September 24, 2026, in the case of INEC v. Zenith Labour Party, which reaffirmed the validity of Section 77 of the Electoral Act 2026.
According to the APC, the judgment reinforces the statutory obligation of political parties to submit their membership registers to INEC at least 21 days before holding primaries, congresses and conventions.
It further stated that only members whose names appear in the duly submitted membership registers are eligible to vote or be voted for during such internal party activities.
The ruling, the party maintained, underscores the importance of complying with established electoral laws and ensuring that political parties conduct their internal affairs in accordance with statutory requirements.
The APC called on INEC to verify compliance with the provisions of the law by all political parties and apply the appropriate statutory consequences wherever violations are established.
It stressed that the commission must discharge this responsibility without fear or favour to any political party.
