Supreme Court Judgement: Senate rules out fresh amendment of electoral act

The Nigerian Senate has ruled out fresh amendment of electoral act after Supreme Court that tended to do a devastating blow to some candidates of political parties.

Speaking with Punch Newspaper on Saturday, Senate Spokesman, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, said all about the electoral act has been completed and fresh amendment would not be introduced amid political parties’ campaign ahead of 2027 general election.

He said the law was designed to guide the conduct of the 2027 general election which was sufficient enough for the smooth conduct of election, adding that if there was a need for a review, it would be after the elections.

According to him, Senate was done with electoral reform meant for the 2027 general election, insisted that amendment could be reconsidered if it becomes absolutely necessary.

“It is only after the elections that we can consider a review if there is any necessity or calls for amendments and rejigging,” he said.

The lawmaker advised individuals and groups with complaints about the law to submit their petitions to the Senate, while maintaining that the National Assembly had already completed its work on the legislation.

“Anybody who has any petition against it should submit it to the Senate, but for us at the Senate and National Assembly, we have passed the electoral bill into law,” he added.

CAPITAL POST recalled that the Supreme Court acted on Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7) and 84(2) of Electoral Act 2026 overturned the Court of Appeal.

The Supreme Court restored the political party membership registers and political party nomination forms as the basis for the primary elections.

This means any political party members whose name was not in the register submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission within the mandatory 21 days will be disqualified.
