In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Phrank Shaibu on Friday in Abuja, Atiku expressed surprise that such fund coming from someone completely unknown to him got him worried because it could be a setup against him.

“Neither His Excellency nor his campaign solicited, authorised or has any knowledge of the individual or entity behind the unauthorised payment,” the statement said.

“Neither His Excellency nor his campaign solicited, authorised or has any knowledge of the individual or entity behind the unauthorised payment,” it said, adding that the circumstances surrounding the transfer are deeply troubling to him.

The statement noted the account is totally a private one and that the details are in the public domain for anyone to send unauthorized money raises a fundamental question as well as it makes him vulnerable to attack.

Atiku wondered on how could account of a private citizen which was supposed to be confidential found it’s into hands of some people. Even more disturbing is the suspicion that such confidential information may have been obtained through persons with privileged access. If established, this would amount to a grave abuse of power capable of exposing the account holder to kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, fraudsters and other criminal elements.

The former Vice President said he’s putting the Nigerian public and the security agencies on notice over the suspicious transaction ahead of next year’s general election.

Stating that as the general election approaches, Nigerians shouldn’t be distracted by setup tactics that smack of character assassination.
