After singing at “Ashawo” joint, N800.00 gift made me quit Church Choir – Rudeboy

Nigeria secular artist Paul Okoye has recounted his musical life, saying that he started being a Gospel singer to becoming secular music maestro.

In his interview with Yanga FM Nigeria, the twin brother of Peter Omoye, another hip hop artist, narrated that he started his music life at a young age in Church Choir.

He said his mother was a pastor, so he was expected to become a pastor.

Paul Okoye whose stage name is Rudeboy explained that his friend one day invited him to sing at an event and promised to pay him 300 naira. He said before going there, he had spent the day singing for adults in church from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and later preaching to children from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Revealed that,.”when he went to the place he foud out that it was an “ashawo joint”. He said after he finished singing there, he was gifted 800 naira and his friend paid him 300 naira.”

He said his life changed there because the appreciation and money he received made him decide to leave gospel music and pursue a career as a secular musician.

In his words: “I sang for the adults from 12 p.m to 3 pm. Then I went for the children’s own from 4 p.m to 6 p.m. From there I was taken to an ashawo joint to go and perform. That was where my life changed”

Rudeboy became popular as one half of the P-Square alongside his twin brother, Mr P after they split, he continued his solo music career as Rudeboy.
