As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, Ambassador Remilekun Olaitan Martins has called for renewed national commitment to unity, inclusive development, cultural preservation and economic empowerment, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

In her Independence Day message, Martins reflected on Nigeria’s journey since October 1, 1960, noting that the anniversary represents not only a celebration of freedom but also an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s progress, challenges and aspirations.

She emphasised that Nigeria’s greatest strength lies in its people, their resilience, diversity, creativity and determination to overcome challenges and create opportunities for future generations.

Drawing from her experience in tourism, entrepreneurship, cultural development and philanthropy, Martins highlighted the importance of investing in sectors that promote economic participation, preserve national identity and create sustainable opportunities for Nigerians.

According to her, tourism and cultural heritage remain significant yet underutilised resources that can contribute to national development, generate employment, attract investment and strengthen Nigeria’s global image.

She also underscored the need to prioritise women and youth empowerment as essential components of a thriving economy, stressing that national development cannot be fully achieved without creating opportunities for women and young people to participate meaningfully in leadership, entrepreneurship and community development.

Through her professional and philanthropic engagements, including her work with Sceptre Tourism and the Remi Martins Child and Humanity Foundation, Martins has been involved in initiatives focused on tourism promotion, educational support, cultural engagement and community advancement.

She noted that a more prosperous Nigeria requires deliberate investment in education, skills development, entrepreneurship and social programmes that enable citizens to contribute productively to the nation’s growth.

The ambassador further called for greater collaboration among government institutions, private-sector organisations, development partners and citizens, emphasising that sustainable progress depends on shared responsibility and a common national vision.

As Nigeria celebrates another year of independence, Martins urged citizens to remain hopeful and committed to building a country where opportunities are more accessible, cultural diversity is celebrated, and every individual can contribute to national prosperity.

She expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, noting that the country’s potential can be realised through purposeful leadership, active citizenship, innovation and sustained investment in its human and economic resources.

“Our independence is a reminder that the future of Nigeria is a shared responsibility. Beyond celebrating our freedom, we must continue to build a nation where unity, opportunity, peace and prosperity are realities for every Nigerian.”

She concluded by wishing Nigerians at home and in the diaspora a memorable Independence Day, expressing hope for a more united, inclusive and economically vibrant nation.

Happy 66th Independence Anniversary, Nigeria!
