An aspirant for the Edo Central Senatorial District seat in the forthcoming bye-elections, Hon. Joseph Ikpea Igiagbe, has pledged to make security a top priority if elected.

He made the promise on Thursday after submitting his forms at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national headquarters in Abuja.

The senatorial seat became vacant following the elevation of Senator Monday Okpebholo to the office of the governor in September 2024.

Addressing journalists, Igiagbe expressed optimism about clinching the APC ticket and winning the election. He commended his supporters and aligned his vision with that of the state governor.

The former local government chairman highlighted his track record and readiness to hit the ground running if elected.

“Today, I came to submit my forms for the Senate position that is vacant in Edo Central Senatorial District.

“We are celebrating two victories because I am very hopeful that the people of Edo Central Senatorial District will give me their support if I’m nominated to represent them. Why I said we are celebrating two victories today: the Supreme Court gave the judgement in favour of our party, our governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and in light of that, the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President has rekindled again among all of us.

“I want to assure you that, as the chairman in my local government, I did wonderfully well — most people can attest to that. So, representing the people of Edo Central wouldn’t be a problem because we already have the analysis and template on what they need. So, I am just waiting for the election to come with the victory and kickstart my program.

“As an African or Nigerian man, our needs are very common — food security, and security itself, and good road infrastructure. These are the key agenda of my governor, and this is also where I am going to key into. Because you know, without security, you can’t do anything. First and foremost, we will deal with the issue of insecurity — that is my first and foremost — and after dealing with that, then we can enter the bush and know what to do. Because the bush is where our food is going to come from.

On his motivation to serve, Igiagbe shared his humble background and desire to give back.

“I am somebody that has gone through pain in my life. I know what I have gone through. I grew up as somebody from a very poor home — an orphan — before God made me to be what I am today. So, I want to give back to society. That is why I want to serve the people.”

He assured of running an all-inclusive government if elected, with regular engagement of constituents.

“It is going to be an all-inclusive government because there will be quarterly town hall meetings where the issues affecting every one of us will be discussed, and when discussed, we will look at it holistically, and we will agree on what to do and implement it. That is my dream, and I pray to God that it will come to pass”, he stressed.

When asked if he is the governor’s preferred candidate, Igiagbe responded, “The issue of anointing belongs to God. If God says I am the anointed, then I am the anointed.”
