Shekarau confident of victory in Kano Central Senate bid

Former Kano State Governor and ex-Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, has expressed confidence that he will emerge victorious in the 2027 contest for the Kano Central Senatorial seat, saying he has combined “hard work and prayers” in pursuit of the mandate.
Shekarau stated this after submitting his Nomination and Expression of Interest forms in Abuja on Thursday.

While formally declaring his intention to contest for the seat, he stressed that leadership ultimately comes from God.
“When we are going into a contest with others, there are always two things: winning and losing. That has been my stand because my very good brother has told us in the Holy Quran that it is He who bestows leadership on whoever He decides. It is He who raises anybody He desires.

“The only two things that the Prophet of Islam has asked us to do are: work for it and pray for it. I have been praying to succeed, and I have been working to succeed. With these two, by the grace of God, I will emerge the winner,” Shekarau added.
The former governor, who also served as a senator in the 9th National Assembly, said his ambition was driven by a desire to continue serving both Kano Central and the country at large.
“I am representing fifteen local governments in Kano State. Above all, I am a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nigeria first, then the constituency second. Without Nigeria, my constituency will not be there,” he stated.
Reflecting on his time in the Senate, Shekarau said he championed the welfare of workers and pensioners as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service.
“As chairman of the committee, the records are there. For the four years I was there, I made sure pensioners were listened to. PenCom received billions out of what was being owed by the federal government.
“We also made sure other agencies addressed the constitutional requirement for regular upward review of pension salaries,” he added.
