The Nigerian government has reacted to the United States Congressmen report on Christian genocide, saying they have no policy targeting any religious group.

The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris described the report as misleading and unacceptable.

The report containing official allegation of Christian killing in Nigeria, presented to Donald Trump on Monday was written by members of the House Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs after months of investigations and field visits.

The Committee members examined Christian persecution and broader extremists violence in Nigeria despite repeated denial by the Nigerian government on Christian genocide.

CAPITAL POST recalled that US President Donald Trump had labelled Nigeria as a country of ‘particular concern’, alleging killing of Christians.

The development triggered probe by the Congress which was led by Congressman Riley Moore and Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole into alleged religious persecution and related violence.

Mohammed Idris in his reaction admitted that the country was facing serious security challenges of terrorism,
banditry and other heinous crimes of communal crisis, but never a targeted religious attacks as being portrayed.

Idris averred that these acts are crimes driven by insecurity and not by government policy or religious bias, highlighting that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and worship for all citizens.

He assured that the government is committed to protecting these rights and providing equal protection under the law.
