Beyond Party Politics: Why track record, competence and accountability should define the future of Idah Federal Constituency

In a democracy, political parties provide platforms, but the quality of representation should ultimately be judged by what elected officials do with the mandate entrusted to them. For the people of Idah Federal Constituency, the conversation about the future should go beyond party colours, political affiliations, slogans and campaign promises. It should focus on performance, accessibility, legislative contributions, community development and accountability.

As the constituency considers its political future, the record of Rt. Hon. David Idris Zacharias deserves examination alongside the records and proposals of other aspirants. The central question is simple: what has each candidate contributed, what challenges remain unresolved, and what credible plans exist to address them?

A Record That Deserves Public Scrutiny

David Idris Zacharias has represented Idah Federal Constituency, comprising Idah, Ibaji, Igalamela-Odolu and Ofu, in the House of Representatives. Reports about his previous constituency interventions have highlighted initiatives in education, water provision, infrastructure and economic empowerment.

In January 2025, The Graphic reported that approximately 50 tertiary students from the constituency received scholarship support and that 20 motorised boreholes had been constructed across the constituency. These are examples of reported interventions that citizens can examine by asking beneficiaries about their experiences and verifying the projects’ locations, functionality and long-term impact.

Earlier reporting in 2020 also documented water projects in parts of the constituency, alongside initiatives involving educational support, vocational empowerment and community infrastructure.

These reports provide a basis for public discussion, but responsible assessment requires more than counting announcements. Residents should establish which projects are operational, how widely their benefits are distributed, and whether the interventions have delivered lasting improvements in people’s lives.

Competence Must Be Measured by Results

Competence in public office is not established by political popularity or the ability to deliver powerful speeches. It requires the capacity to understand people’s problems, navigate government institutions, engage in legislative work and pursue practical solutions.

For a federal representative, this includes effective representation at the National Assembly, constructive participation in lawmaking, oversight of government programmes and the pursuit of projects that address the constituency’s needs.

The people of Idah should therefore examine the evidence of legislative contributions, constituency projects, educational support, employment facilitation and other interventions associated with every candidate. They should also ask what has not been achieved and what lessons have been learned.

A credible record should withstand scrutiny. It should be supported by verifiable documents, physical projects, transparent accounts and the testimony of people who have directly benefited.

Development Must Reach Every Part of the Constituency

Idah Federal Constituency is made up of communities with different needs and development priorities. Access to clean water, reliable roads, quality education, healthcare, agricultural support, security and employment opportunities remains central to any meaningful development agenda.

The challenge for every representative is to ensure that public attention and development initiatives reach communities across all four local government areas.

Citizens should assess whether interventions are distributed fairly, whether neglected communities are being reached and whether projects are selected according to genuine public needs rather than political considerations.

They should also demand clear priorities for the next legislative term, with measurable targets and realistic timelines. Development should not be reduced to isolated projects or temporary empowerment programmes; it should contribute to sustainable improvements in living standards.

Party Loyalty Should Not Replace Accountability

Political parties are important to Nigeria’s democracy, but party membership alone cannot establish the quality of an individual’s representation. A candidate’s party affiliation should not prevent citizens from asking difficult questions about performance, integrity, policy priorities and the responsible use of public resources.

Likewise, changing political affiliations should not automatically erase a candidate’s previous achievements or excuse shortcomings. Every candidate should be assessed using consistent standards and verifiable evidence.

The people of Idah deserve a political culture in which leaders explain their decisions, acknowledge unfinished commitments and demonstrate how they intend to address the needs of their constituents.

The most meaningful political conversation is not simply about which party a candidate represents. It is about the candidate’s record, the relevance of their proposals and the mechanisms through which the public can hold them accountable.

The Standard for the Future

As the constituency looks ahead, voters should demand a clear development agenda, evidence of past performance, realistic commitments and a willingness to engage with communities beyond election periods.

They should examine Rt. Hon. David Idris Zacharias’s reported interventions, investigate their actual outcomes and compare them with the records and proposals of other candidates. Where achievements are verified, they should be recognised. Where gaps remain, they should be addressed openly.

Democracy becomes stronger when citizens make informed decisions based on evidence rather than pressure, sentiment or party identity.

Ultimately, the future of Idah Federal Constituency should be shaped by a public assessment of representation: what has been delivered, what remains outstanding, what can realistically be achieved and who is prepared to answer to the people.

Beyond party politics, the enduring standard should be responsible leadership, verifiable performance, equitable development and accountability to the electorate. The people of Idah deserve nothing less.
