A popular Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has claimed that the United States supported Biafra in the civil war that broke out in 1967 and lasted till 1970, hence, it lacks morality to lay allegations of perpetuating killing of Christians by Muslims.

In a post on his Facebook on Monday 26 October, 2026, Gumi maintained that the US has negative attitude towards Nigerian muslims, criticising US whether genocide narrative was driven by genuine religious concerns or foreign interests.

He suggested that such claims could be used to pursue political and economic goals, including access to Nigeria’s mineral resources.

He wrote, “America supported biafra during Nigeria’s civil war, now it claims christian genocide.”

Gumi suspected that such expensive allegations might be leading to the United States having access to Nigeria’s mineral resources.

The cleric who was a retired military officer recalled that the late leader of Biafra Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu had raised concerns about Arab and muslim domination to support the call for secession.

He challenged the narrative of Muslims domination at that time, adding that Nigeria’s Head of State at that time ,. General Yakubu was a Christian from Plateau State, stressing that it was wrong linking the civil war with religion.

Gumi further cited the First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. He argued that her religious background challenged claims that Nigeria’s government was exclusively muslim or opposed to christians. However, he maintained that religious differences among political leaders alone could not determine whether persecution or violence existed in the country.

Gumi called for protection of human life, urging any country to stop mainstreaming their interests through claims of religious differences.
