This statement was made in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s potential plans for military action in Nigeria, reportedly sparked by claims of Christian persecution. The Nigerian government has also rebuffed Trump’s potential intervention.

President Bola Tinubu’s aide, Daniel Bwala, stated on Monday that Nigeria expects the U.S. to respect its sovereignty. Bwala dismissed accusations of anti-Christian actions as part of a campaign to damage the Tinubu administration, adding that reliable observers have found no evidence of state-sponsored religious genocide.

Bwala alleged that some U.S. senators, such as Ted Cruz, have been influenced by IPOB (a separatist group) who are seeking to influence Washington’s foreign policy, to push the false narrative about a Christian genocide in Nigeria. He cited an investigative report that suggested that the group has amplified the narrative since 2016. Bwala emphasized that the government is focusing on solutions and has made progress in addressing insecurity.

The Nigerian government is pushing back against U.S. pressure, dismissing allegations of religious persecution and emphasizing its sovereignty. The situation highlights the growing global political tensions and the complex interplay of human rights, religious freedom, and national sovereignty.
