Former Nigerian Army personnel, Ruth Ogunleye, who previously accused senior military officers of failing to address her sexual harassment complaints, has reportedly been arrested and transferred to another location for detention.

According to a source familiar with the development, Ogunleye was taken from Lagos to Kaduna and is currently being held in custody pending trial. However, conflicting details have emerged regarding her destination, with another account claiming she was transferred to a prison in Abuja.

As of the time of this report, the circumstances surrounding her arrest, the specific allegations against her and the legal grounds for her detention remain unclear.

The source also alleged that the arrest was ordered by Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd.). However, this claim has not been independently verified, and no official statement has been issued to clarify the minister’s alleged involvement.

Background to Ogunleye’s Controversial Case
Ogunleye came into the public spotlight in January 2024 after accusing Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem and other senior military officers of sexual harassment, intimidation and alleged mistreatment.

She claimed that she faced difficulties within the military after rejecting what she described as unwanted sexual advances. She also alleged that officers who could have intervened failed to provide the necessary support or ensure that her complaints received adequate attention.

Among those she said she approached for assistance was General Christopher Gwabin Musa, who was then serving as Chief of Defence Staff before his subsequent appointment as Minister of Defence.

During an interview monitored by SaharaReporters in September 2024, Ogunleye said she had sought intervention from several senior officers but believed her efforts had yielded no meaningful results.

She maintained that despite reporting the alleged misconduct and pursuing established military channels for redress, her concerns were not adequately addressed.

Army’s Position on the Allegations
The Nigerian Army subsequently investigated Ogunleye’s allegations and stated that its findings did not substantiate the sexual harassment claims against Colonel Abdulkareem.

The military also maintained that Ogunleye’s discharge from service followed medical assessments and was based on medical grounds.

However, in October 2024, the former soldier called for a review of the investigation, expressing concerns that the findings might have been compromised. She also spoke about the reputational consequences of the controversy and the stigma associated with the allegations.

Questions Remain Over Reported Arrest
Ogunleye’s reported arrest has raised fresh questions about the circumstances of her detention, the nature of any pending charges and whether the development is connected to her earlier allegations against senior military personnel.

At present, there is insufficient publicly confirmed information to establish whether her reported arrest is related to the previous controversy or an entirely separate matter.

SaharaReporters reportedly contacted the Nigerian Army’s spokesperson, Colonel Appolonia Anele, seeking clarification on the arrest, Ogunleye’s current legal status and the authorities responsible for her reported transfer. However, calls and messages seeking her response had not received an answer at the time of publication.

Until the relevant authorities provide an official explanation, important questions surrounding the reported arrest remain unanswered.
The public deserves clarity on the circumstances of the detention, the legal basis for any charges and the due-process protections available to the former soldier. At the same time, the allegations against all parties must be assessed on the basis of verifiable evidence rather than speculation.
