As the fortune of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP continue to dwindle, the next governor to defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC may be Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State.

Taraba State in the North East Nigeria has been the foothold of the PDP and since 1999, the party has ruled the State, but there are strong indications that governor Kefas will move to APC, thus ending the 26 year rule of the party in the State,

Sources confirmed to select journalists last weekend that the governor has been frequently visiting power brokers in the ruling All Progressives Congress in Abuja, discussing interests around the APC.

He was also said to be weighing his decision as Taraba is traditionally a PDP State, but the advantage of joining a political party that rules at the centre may also be another advantage, a close ally disclosed this dilemma of the governor to journalists.

The soure said: “It’s no longer speculation. Consultations are ongoing, and the governor is weighing the timing carefully,” a senior aide said.

Taraba State chapter of APC are already aware and are at alert of plans for Governor Kefas to defect which was described as “a homecoming long overdue,” saying the governor’s leadership style and grassroots appeal would strengthen the ruling party’s base ahead of 2027.

“Kefas is a performer. His coming will only make our structure stronger,” the source said.

While the APC are in ecstasy of excitement, the PDP fold are in discomfort, fearing that power is leaving their hands after 26 years which they described as “a betrayal of mandate” that could decimate the opposition’s hold in the North-East.

“If Kefas moves, PDP will be finished in Taraba. He is the only one still holding the structure together,” a senior party member admitted.

Kefas defection plan is coming amid deepening infighting in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, even as the planned national convention of PDP is still under threat.
