Week 2 CVR: Registered female adults out numbered men, says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission says more women than men have so far registered in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to the commission, 1,313,580 women have completed the online pre-registration process, compared to 1,218,482 men. The figures cover the first two weeks of the online registration, which started on August 18, 2025.
He explained that women also led in the in-person registration which started on August 25, 2025. Out of 72,274 fresh registrants recorded in five days, 36,652 were women while 35,622 were men.

Olumekun said most of the registrants were young people aged 18 to 34, while students made up a large percentage of the new voters.
The commissioner urged Nigerians who pre-registered online to complete the process in person at INEC’s designated centres across the 811 local government and state offices nationwide, noting that online registration alone is not valid without biometric capture.
He added that detailed breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation and disability have been uploaded on the commission’s website for public information.
