Civil Rights Activist and ex-Senator who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly has revealed how he was threatened for attempting to initiate dialogue for peace in Maiduguri years ago.

In a post on his X handle, Sani said he privately travelled with the former President Olusegun Obasanjo to Maiduguri in the heat of terrorists attacks as facilitated by someone, but on getting back home after the trip, the facilitator was eliminated, while he faced threats.

He said records show that most prominent Islamic Clerics who were assassinated in the North have something in common and that was because they stood against extremism.

The All Progressives Congress, APC Senatorial candidate in next year’s general election, added that clerics who were eliminated advocated for religious tolerance and peace.

He wrote: “All the prominent clerics that have been assassinated in the North in the last fifteen years have THREE common factors that undoubtedly led to their elimination.

“Speaking out against extremism, advocating for inter religious tolerance and peace and mentioning the name of terror leaders or groups by their name in their sermons.

“In 2011,Ex President Obasanjo and myself privately went to Maiduguri to initiate a dialogue for peace, after the event we headed back to Abuja; the next day, the man who facilitated the dialogue was eliminated, and we received threats.

Sani’s remark comes at the backdrop of the killing of Katsina Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Council of Katsina State on Monday October 28, 2026.
